1782 Census
of Mecklenburg Co, VA

The original 1790 Federal census for Mecklenburg Co was destroyed by fire during the War of 1812. The census was "reconstructed" using the 1782 records below. So although this is sometimes referred to as the 1790 census, the records actually reflect the total number of whites and blacks listed for each household in 1782 with no breakdown by ages or sexes. This explains why Drury Bowen was listed on the 1790 census in Mecklenburg but was actually living in Abbeville Co, SC by 1790. It also explains why Hicks Bowen who died in 1787 appeared on the 1790 census.
