Henry Isaac b. 12 Mar 1853 James Bryant Bowen married Susanna A. Wilkins on 12 Oct 1866 in Halifax, VA. Susanna was a widow and from looking at the 1870 census, it looks like she had three children from her previous marriage. Cordelia, Sarah, and Catherine are listed with the last name of Bowen in the 1870 Halifax, VA census, but must have been children of Susanna’s first marriage. The following are the children of James Bryant and Susanna: 1. Julia A. b. 3 Nov 1867 2. George Lee b. 28 Feb 1869 3. Mildred S. b. 5 Dec 1870 4. Malvenia Florence b. 22 Aug 1872 5. Bailey Green b. 9 Jun 1874 6. Elnora Haskin b. 6 Jun 1876 7. William Wise b. 12 Jan 1878 8. Rosa Alice b. 2 Jun 1880 (It would be wonderful to display a photograph of this family or any of its members. Please let us know if you have one and we can work out how to add it to this page.) James Bryant died 1 Jul 1911 and Susanna A. died 2 Oct 1898. They both resided in the Red Bank area of Halifax, VA. James Bryant lived on land that his father, James Bowen, originally purchased (74 acres in 1843) from Joseph Wilkins – who had purchased this piece of land from Elisha Bowen in 1820. The records of what became of this land can be found in the deed books of Halifax, VA, which can be found at the Court House in South Boston or on microfilm. James Bryant’s homeplace is still standing today. It is in excellent condition having been cared for through the years by his descendants. A photograph was taken on 28 Mar 2001 and is exhibited below. A deed for this property (which was purchased by Elisha Bowen in 1814) describes it as being bordered by Aaron's Creek. (Aaron's Creek forms the boundary between eastern Halifax and western Mecklenburg counties.) Below is a photo of Aaron's Creek - taken March 28, 2001. This particular spot is a little south of where Elisha Bowen's property was located. |
