The 1787, 1789, 1790, 1791 Mecklenburg tax records listed James Bowen and son Zachariah. The 1798, 1799 Mecklenburg tax records listed James Bowen and son Elisha. The 1801, 1802, and 1803 Mecklenburg tax records listed James Bowen alone. He wasn't listed in 1804, but the 1805 Mecklenburg tax records listed James Bowen and son Wyatt.
v A James Bowen, very possibly this one, was named as a legatee of Robert Bowen who died about 1788/89:

Mecklenburg Deed Book 8, p 401, 402:
22 Dec 1792 James Bowen, Martha Bowen, and Mary Evans, legatees of Robert Bowen's estate deceased of Mecklenburg Co to Charles Bowen and James Bowen of the country aforesaid. ... for diverse good causes themselves hereunto moving but more especially for and in consideration of the just and fare(?) sum of three pounds current money of Virginia ... parcel of land containing by estimation sixty acres adjoining the lands of John Nash Senr, Jesse Bowen, Mark Evans, Senr and the said James Bowen and John Harper and the said Drury Bowen ...
Signed Mary (+) Evans, Martha (+) Bowen, James (+) Bowen
Witnesses James Williams, Wm. Drumwright, Richard Whitehead

No records for another James Bowen have been found, and the deed made no attempt to distinguish James Bowen the grantor from James Bowen the grantee, so it is possible they were one in the same.

Notes for James Bowen (parents unknown):
1. In 1782 he is listed with 9 in his household in Mecklenburg, VA.

2. In 1820 he is 45+ yrs, his wife is 45+ yrs, he has 1 boy that is under 10 yrs, and 1 boy that is between 10-16 yrs living with them.

3. There is no marriage record for James and Susanna - her maiden name is unknown at present.

4. Children for this couple (so far):

1) Zachariah
2) Elisha
3) Stacy
4) Richard Jones
5) Wyatt

5. In a court document involving heirs of Isaac Sallee (father of Magdalene Sallee, wife of Elisha Bowen) it lists the children of Elisha Bowen. Law Order Book #5, 12 Sep 1856, p. 296.

Happy Westbrook, Joseph Sallee, Jacob W. Stone and Elizabeth his wife, Wm Hurt and Jane his wife, Mary I. House, Bryant Bowen, Jos. Gholson & Betsey his wife, Geo. Newton & Sally his wife, James Bowen, Wm Bowen, John Bowen, Wm Lowry and Nancy his wife, John Redd & Patsey his wife, & William James Redd a minor who sues by James Bowen his next friend.

against:

Edward R. Chambers, exor of Elizabeth Sallee, Dec'd and exor of Abraham Sallee, dec'd and Isaac B. Sallee.

By 1856, Magdalene (Sallee) Bowen has died, so it would be her children that would be the heirs in her place at this time. The relationship of those involved are as follows: Happy Westbrook is Magdalene's sister. They are the sisters of Isaac B. Sallee. Joseph Sallee is the son of James Sallee, who is the brother of Isaac C. Sallee. Elizabeth Stone is the daughter of Susannah (Sallee) Shackleford, a sister to Isaac B. Sallee. Jane Hurt is the daughter of Susannah (Sallee) Shackleford, a sister to Isaac B. Sallee. Mary I. House, unknown relationship. Bryant Bowen, Betsey Gholson, Sally Newton, James Bowen, Wm Bowen, John Bowen, Nancy Lowry, Patsey Redd are children of Magdalene (Sallee) Bowen. William James Redd is a child of 10 years of age and is the son of Rebecca Bowen Redd (another daughter of Magdalene Bowen) who died about 1850. James Bowen, "his next friend", would be his uncle.

6. From Mecklenburg, VA Deed Bk #27, p. 367:
"A list or register of the slaves willed to Zachariah Bowen & Mavel Bowen, his wife during their lives by James Bowen dec'd. This register taken this 1st day of Jany: 1837 by Benj. W. Coleman. Who purchased the right of Wm H. Hurt & Polly Shackleford, Zachariah Shackleford having purchased in life time the said Zachariah Bowen & Mavel his wife's interest in the said slaves & two of the other legatees rights: Vilett, dec'd some years age, Daniel about 16 years of age, John about 9 years of age, Willis about five years of age and Robert about 3; all boys and children of the said negro woman Vilett, dec'd." [signed] Benjamin W. Coleman
Mecklenburg County Clerks office 26 Nov 1837.

7. Zachariah Bowen married Mavel Dummond 2 Oct 1795, Mecklenburg, VA. Although Zachariah was listed for the first time on the tax lists under his own name in 1785, he was listed under James Bowen and noted as his son in 1787. Only Mavel was listed in the 1840 Mecklenburg census. Mavel was still a widow in 1860 census. She left a will (proved 18 Feb 1861) naming her neice, Mary Curtis, as sole heir. This couple doesn't appear to have had any children, based on census records. Zachariah was named in his father’s will (dated 22 Dec 1825).

8. Stacy Bowen married Reuben Cardin 8 Jan 1793, Mecklenburg, VA. Their marriage record gave the names of her parents. Reuben Carden is listed in the Orange County, NC census for the years 1800, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860. In 1850 they were both listed as 75 years of age. In 1860 Reuben was listed as 86 years of age. Found record of this couple in Orange, NC in that county's Poor House documents. It was stated that they were moved to the poor house on 23 Feb 1857 and were over the age of 75. These records state that Stacy Cardin died 29 Feb 1859 and by 1861, Reuben Cardin was still there. They had children, but their names are unknown at this time.

9. Elisha Bowen first appeared on the Mecklenburg, VA tax lists in 1798 listed under James Bowen and noted as his son. He married Magdalene Sallee 24 Aug 1803, Mecklenburg, VA. He shows up on the 1812 Halifax, VA tax list. He sold 198 1/2 acres in Mecklenburg, VA on 22 Dec 1812. He bought 173 acres on Aaron's Creek in Halifax, VA on 28 Oct 1814. Then bought 70 acres on Aaron's Creek on 27 Nov 1820. He sold 81 acres on Aaron's Creek on 26 Jun 1820 to Joseph Wilkins and 10 acres same day to Obadiah Overby. Then he sold 170 acres on Aaron's Creek in March 1825 to Isaac B. Sallee. They remained in Halifax, VA until 1840 census. It is not known for sure what happened to this couple. Their children all married and lived in this county. Magdalene Bowen shows up on the Mecklenburg county court orders as deceased in Dec. 1851: "On motion of Jos. Gholson & Jacob W. Stone, ordered that the est. of Magdalin Bowen to come to the hands of John F. Finch, Sheff of this county."

Elisha and Magdalene's children as follows (based on the above court document involving Happy Westbrook):
